The Marriage of True Minds, Part Trois

“Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments.”

–William Shakespeare

Note to self: Was Shakespeare happily married? Well, Romeo and Juliet aside, who knows what even passed for happily married back then. Today, things are different—and marriage is different.

In a world where more than half of all marriages end in divorce, staying married to that “one single person in the world who fills your heart with joy” is as tough as finding him.

Note to reader: For those of you cold-hearted pragmatists who do not believe that true love is a romantic comedy, that’s how Tom Hanks describes Meg Ryan in Nora Ephron’s You’ve Got Mail. (I’ve seen this movie a gazillion times; now you know why I’ve been married more than once, and yet remain single.)

For those of you who are married and want to stay that way, let me recommend The Marriage Devotional: 365 Simple Ways to Celebrate Your Love by my dear friend Meera Lester, who’s really, really good at marriage. Recently married a second time after several years of widowhood, she has two—count ‘em, two!—happy unions to her credit.

I was thrilled—if bewildered—when I first learned that Meera had found love again. Granted, she’s a lovely woman, but I know lots of lovely women who are single and can’t find one good husband, much less two (myself included).

Then I read The Marriage Devotional, and I understood why Meera makes such good marriages. She knows what to do to create that “marriage of true minds.” Not to mention body and soul.

Check it out, and give your marriage a little refresher course in love, affection, and sex. You’ll be glad that you did.

Note to the world: Reading The Marriage Devotional is like watching You’ve Got Mail. It makes you hungry for that one single person in the world…yadda yadda yadda. So if you know anyone with a penchant for outspoken blondes, send him my way.
