UNTOUCHABLE by Scott O’Connor Wins Discover Great New Writers Barnes & Noble Fiction Prize

We are pleased to announce UNTOUCHABLE (F+W Media/Tyrus, May 2011), the critically acclaimed debut novel by Scott O’Connor, was named the winner of the prestigious Barnes & Noble “Discover Great New Writers” Award. UNTOUCHABLE was one of the first titles published by F+W under the Tyrus Books/F+W Crime mystery imprint, which launched in April 2011.

The Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers program was established in 1990 to highlight works of exceptional literary quality that might otherwise be overlooked in a crowded book marketplace. Titles chosen for the program are handpicked by a select group of booksellers four times a year, and honors have been given to authors such as David Guterson (Snow Falling on Cedars), and David Sheff (Beautiful Boy).

Chosen by a panel of independent judges made up of Discover alumni and other notable writers, the six finalists for the Discover Great New Writers Award represent the best of what the bookseller selection committee read last year. The fiction prize was presented by judges Chris Abani, Lauren Belfer, and Bo Caldwell.

Bo Caldwell on UNTOUCHABLE: “This book won my heart from the start; as soon as I began reading about this father and son, I felt I knew them and cared deeply about them. David Darby and The Kid and their story, both harrowing and heartbreaking, have stayed with me since I read the last page of this beautiful novel, and I suspect they’ll remain with me for a long time. I’m in awe of the mix of emotion, hope, and realism that this author achieves, and grateful to him for doing so.”

The book follows the story of a father and son struggling to cope with their wife and mother’s unexpected death, as the impending arrival of Y2K casts a shadow of uncertainty around them.

“I knew immediately that UNTOUCHABLE was a special book and one that spoke to the core goals of Tyrus’ publishing philosophy—exploring the human condition from characters who are at once on the fringes, but also a part of the greater humanity we pass by in the grocery store, on the street, anywhere,” says Ben LeRoy, publisher of Tyrus Books and Prologue Books. “I called Scott’s agent after reading two paragraphs of Untouchable and acquired the book before reading another word. I was not disappointed.”

“A voice so insistently stirring, you want to lean in close to catch every word.”–The New York Times Book Review

It is the autumn of 1999. A year has passed since Lucy Darby’s unexpected death, leaving her husband David and son Whitley to mend the gaping hole in their lives. David, a trauma-site cleanup technician, spends his nights expunging the violent remains of strangers, helping their families to move on, though he is unable to do the same. Whitley – an 11 year-old social pariah known simply as The Kid – hasn’t spoken since his mother’s death. Instead, he communicates through a growing collection of notebooks, living in a safer world of his own silent imagining.

As the impending arrival of Y2K casts a shadow of uncertainty around them, their own precarious reality begins to implode. Questions pertaining to the events of Lucy’s death begin to haunt David, while The Kid, who still believes his mother is alive, enlists the help of his small group of misfit friends to bring her back. As David continues to lose his grip on reality and The Kid’s sense of urgency grows, they begin to uncover truths that will force them to confront their deepest fears about each other and the wounded family they are trying desperately to save.

Scott O’Connor was born in Syracuse, New York, the son of an air-traffic controller and a preschool teacher. He is a co-founder of GO Studios, a post-production and motion graphics design firm. A Child Al Confino: The True Story of a Jewish Boy and His Mother in Mussolini’s Italy: FREE for Holocaust Remembrance Day

International Holocaust Remembrance Day, officially January 27th, is a time to remember and celebrate the lives of those lost to the Holocaust. For THIS WEEK ONLY we are offering Eric Lamet’s tale of family exile, as told in A CHILD AL CONFINO: The True Story of a Jewish Boy and His Mother in Mussolini’s Italy, for FREE as an eBook, 1/22-1/28.

Eric Lamet was only seven years old when the Nazis invaded Vienna – and changed his life and the lives of all European Jews forever. Five days after Hitler marches, Eric Lamet and his parents flee for their lives. His father goes back to his native Poland – and never comes back. His mother hides out in Italy, on the run from place to place, taking her son deeper and deeper into the mountains to avoid capture.

Having now lived in the United States since 1950, author Lamet offers a rare and historically important portrait: a unique recount of a young boy’s experiences during the Holocaust, and one the reader will not soon forget. To view and download the full eBook, please visit:

Remember the Children of the #Holocaust w/ A CHILD AL CONFINO. FREE as an #eBook #Holocaust Memorial Day Week #HMD12: http://bit.ly/yP6jcQ

More About the Book:

“Survivors’ testimonies, such as this, are essential in the understanding of what we so poorly call the Holocaust.”  – Elie Wiesel

In a feat of memory and imagination, Lamet recreates the Italy he knew from the perspective of the scared and lonely child he once was. We not only see the hardships and terrors faced by foreign Jews in Fascist Italy, but also the friends Eric makes and his mother’s valiant efforts to make a home for him.

A story about family, either by blood or by circumstance; a mother’s bravery and wit; and a young man’s naïveté –  Eric’s ability to recognize the unpredictable positives during the hardships of war afforded him the vivid experiences, memorable relationships and lessons about life that make this book stand apart.

Eric Lamet was born Erich Lifschutz on May 27, 1930, into an upper-middle-class Jewish family. Both his parents, born in Poland, moved to Vienna before the first Great War.

On March 18, 1938, five days after the Anschluss, when German troops had marched into Vienna, Lamet’s family fled to Italy, where he spent most of the next twelve years. After World War II ended, Lamet settled in Naples with his family. He finished high school in that city and studied Engineering at the University of Naples.

In 1950 the family moved to the United States, where Lamet continued his engineering studies at the Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia, near his family’s home. Deciding that business would be more in keeping with his personality, he embarked on a business career. Over the years he became involved in a variety of enterprises until his eventual retirement as a CEO in 1992.

Fluent in German, Italian, English, Spanish, and Yiddish, Lamet served as an interpreter for the U.S. State Department and taught Italian for several years. Lamet has three children, two stepchildren, and seven granddaughters. They were the reason this book was written. He lives with his wife in Tamarac, Florida.

HURT MACHINE by Reed Farrel Coleman, Reviewed by the New York Times

Happy Holidays!

We are pleased to announce that Hurt Machine,  the critically acclaimed NYC crime thriller by Reed Farrel Coleman, received a national book review in The New York Times today:

“Moe Prager’s … first love will always be Brooklyn. Reed Farrel Coleman’s latest book in a series heavily saturated with local color. Prager … travels the length and breadth of the city talking to cops, firemen, gangsters and restaurateurs in their picturesque natural habitats. For someone who reads people by the places they eat, drink and make merry, that’s good enough to make Prager postpone his death until he solves this case.” —New York Times Book Review

Hurt Machine is the new, and seventh, Moe Prager mystery from acclaimed mystery writer Reed Farrel Coleman and Tyrus Books. The reader finds Moe trying to solve the murder of his ex-wife’s sister, all while planning a wedding for his daughter, and battling his own inner demons.

Reed Farrel Coleman has been called “a hard-boiled poet” by NPR’s Maureen Corrigan, and Hurt Machine recently received a starred review in Publishers Weekly: “Razor-edged contemporary whodunits don’t get much better than Shamus-winner Coleman’s seventh Moe Prager mystery.”

HURT MACHINE: The Seventh Moe Prager Mystery by Reed Farrel Coleman

At a pre-wedding party for his daughter Sarah, Moe Prager is approached by his ex-wife and former PI partner Carmella Melendez. It seems Carmella’s estranged sister Alta has been murdered, but no one in New York City seems to care. Why? Alta, a FDNY EMT, and her partner had months earlier refused to give assistance to a dying man at a fancy downtown eatery. Moe decides to help Carmella as a means to distract himself from his own life and death struggle. Making headway on the case is no mean feat as no one, including Alta’s partner Maya Watson, wants to cooperate. Moe chips away until he discovers a cancer roiling just below the surface, a cancer whose symptoms include bureaucratic greed, sexual harassment, and blackmail. But is any of it connected to Alta’s brutal murder?

Reed Farrel Coleman is the former executive vice president of Mystery Writers of America. He has published twelve novels—two under his pen name Tony Spinosa—in three series, and one stand-alone with award winning Irish author Ken Bruen. His books have been translated into seven languages.

He has also received the Macavity, Barry, and Anthony Awards, and has been twice nominated for the Edgar(R) Award.
