The Great New England Comic Con 2010 Recap!

This past weekend’s Wizard World New England Comic Con/BuffyFest in Boston has come and gone, and though we left with a bit of the Con sickness *sniff*, it was definitely worth it (if not only for the heaping pile of discount graphic novels and comics we left with!).

We made friends with the delightfully charming Wizard World staff and volunteer team; the lovely Suicide Girl reps; the boys at Harrison’s Comics & Collectibles and Comically Speaking right here in MA, and more!

Though I mostly stayed at the booth, I caught a glimpse of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer freaks gobbling up vampire merch and forking over big bucks for photo opps and autographs with some of the cast members (minus Buffy); the Six Million Dollar Man people (six million dollars or six million years old? these guys were ancient!), Lee Majors, and some wrestling people that I did not recognize – which means nothing. Doug Jones, who I LOVE, was also there as a former character from Buffy – he’s the guy who played the Silver Surfer in the Fantastic Four flicks, El Fauno in Pan’s Labyrinth, Abe Sapien in Hellboy, etc., etc. – a phenomenally talented, underrated performer.

An accurate portrayal of the types of fans that attended can be seen in this ridiculous NESN video, where the host walked around asking Con visitors sports trivia trying to embarrass them. The funniest part is that these interviewees clearly just don’t give a crap – especially the hilarious duo dressed up as Batman‘s Harley Quinn and Joker.

Top 5 Things We Loved at the Con

  1. The Costumes: we loved Darth Maul and the priceless little brother and sister Star Wars duo riding around on their Dad’s legit R2D2 replica. The Ghostbusters of New Hampshire were also awesome.
  2. Adam West + Burt Ward: charging almost $200 for a photo…each. Yeah, we love you, but not that much.
  3. Secret Service Guards: Obama was in the house for a Deval Patrick rally right next door, so we got scoped out all day Saturday by special guards. They looked at us like we were the geeks sitting at the “uncool” table in the high school caf.
  4. The Video Game Booth: I came in early both days to whip some butt at Mario Kart 64. This vendor had every video game console imaginable – I was thisss close to buying a Super Nintendo.
  5. Antibacterial Hand Sanitizer: because people (nerds) are dirty.

The best thing that happened all weekend? Author Tony Pacitti (seriously doing it all for the wookiee in our last blog post), who joined me at the table to do a book signing of My Best Friend is a Wookiee , was actually reunited with his BFF! The photo is priceless.
